Kathmandu: In today's meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR), lawmakers called on the government to accelerate mitigation, relief, and rescue efforts in response to the hazards posed by the monsoon season. They voiced concerns over the widespread impact of landslides, floods, lightning strikes, and inundations across the country.
Ishwari Devi Neupane urged the government to ensure prompt relief and rescue operations for those affected, emphasizing the need to mitigate potential future incidents. Lawmakers Manbir Rai and Amanlal Modi also highlighted these urgent issues.
Amresh Kumar Singh raised concerns about the public danger posed by damaged electric cables, demanding that relevant authorities address the management of these hazards. Ram Hari Khatiwada informed the House about the loss of lives and property due to floods and landslides in Okhaldhunga, noting that injured individuals had been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. He also highlighted disruptions to essential services such as drinking water, electricity, internet, and irrigation.
HoR member Man Bahadur Gurung called for relief, compensation, and accessible healthcare for victims in Kaski, where landslides and floods have caused significant damage. Urmila Majhi reported the death of six people in Lamjung due to monsoon-related disasters. Kiran Sah emphasized the need for the government and relevant bodies to focus on disaster management, risk reduction, and preparedness.
Abdul Khan informed the House that 20 people were killed and more than 16 injured due to recent rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. He demanded a detailed investigation into the increasing anomalies in the education sector.
From June 10-26, 33 districts have been affected by various disasters. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the most impacted districts include Taplejung, Panchthar, Sankhuwasabha, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Lamjung, Parbat, Myagdi, Nawalparasi East, Gulmi, Dang, and Kaski. During this period, 147 disaster-related incidents resulted in 28 fatalities—14 from landslides, 13 from lightning strikes, and one from flooding. Additionally, 12 people were injured, 25 houses were completely destroyed, and 10 houses were partially damaged due to landslides.
The Secretariat of Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane reported that landslides caused property damage worth over Rs 6.9 million. There were 68 lightning incidents during this period, resulting in 13 deaths, 24 injuries, and property damage exceeding Rs 1.7 million. Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, spokesperson at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, reported that 18 people were killed in disaster incidents on June 25 and 26, with nine deaths from lightning and nine from flooding and landslides.
